Towson Lawyer, 35, Son Of Judge, Pronounced Heart Attack Victim
Thousands Watch As Coast Guard Members Attempt To Revive Him
    [Special Dispatch to The Sun]
Ocean City, Md, July 4-John Y. Offutt, 35-year-old Towson lawyer and son of Chief Judge T. Scott Offutt died of a heart attack while swimming here this afternoon several hundred feet of the boardwalk near the fishing pier. Dr. F. J. Townsend pronounced Mr. Offutt dead and said he believed death was caused by heart failure.
    Suddenly Jumps Into Water
However, for more than two hours after his body had been recovered floating near the pier, members of Coast Guard beach patrol administered artificial respiration on the boardwalk while thousands spending the holiday here looked on. Dr. John L. Riley, Worcester county medical examiner, gave a verdict of accidental death from a heart attack. According to Dr. Townsend, young Offutt was fishing from the end of the pier that juts about 450 feet out into the ocean from the boardwalk. Suddenly, Dr. Townsend said he was told, Mr. Offutt announced that he intended to take a swim. removed his shoes and jumped feet first into the water. The pier is about twenty-five feet above the ocean.
    Thought He Was Clowning
Witnesses said, according to Dr. Townsend, that Mr. Offutt swam around for a few minutes, pulling at the lines of other persons who were fishing and then his head dropped over with his face under water. Those who were watching him, according to the physician, thought for a while that he was clowning, but became alarmed when his body had drifted in this position about seventy-five yards toward the beach. The beach patrol sent two men, William West and Harry Huxford, who lifted Offutt's body to the pier with a rope and then started artificial respiration.
    Identified Body
As close as could be figured, Offutt jumped into the water about 5.30 P. M. and the Coast Guardsmen started to work over him on the boardwalk about ten minutes later. His body was identified by Magistrate William S. Lickle, Baltimore county magistrate, who, however, said he had not seen Mr. Offutt until notified by the police. Others who identified him were Charles A. Anderton. former member of the House of Delegates from Baltimore, and his brother, George T. Anderton, an inspector for the Board of Liquor License Commissioners of Baltimore."

William Volk, who has made his home near Battle Creek for the past thirty-five years, passed away Wednesday night at the home of his son, John Volk, southwest of town. The funeral will be held at the Fairview church Saturday afternoon and interment will be made in the family lot at the Fairview cemetery. For over a year Mr. Volk had suffered with cancer of the stomach. Several months ago he underwent an operation and at that time physicians had little hope that he would survive the ordeal. However, he recovered from the operation to such an extent that he was able to be out occasionally but it was known that only temporary relief had been given. Deceased was 73 years old and is survived by five sons and five daughters."

A large; number of friends, among them many old settlers of the county, gathered to pay last respects. Mr. Volk was a native of Germany. He emigrated to the United States and after a residence of a few years in the east he came to Nebraska and located on a farm in Madison county, sharing his lot with other pioneers. Here he reared a large family, giving them every advantage possible, and all members have taken their place among our best and most prominent citizens. Honorable and upright in all his dealings, ready to meet adversities without complaint, he commanded the respect of all and will be greatly missed in the community which has known him so long. "LAST HONORS GIVEN FRED VOLK - Prominent Citizen Who Died Saturday at Lincoln Laid to Rest--Masonic Fraternity Officiates.- The body of Fred Volk, whose sudden death at a Lincoln hospital on Wednesday, January 28, was announced last week, was brought to Battle Creek on Thursday afternoon accompanied by the wife and son George, and August Volk, a brother, and taken to the home southeast of town. Funeral services under the auspices of the Masonic order were held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon Rev. L.L. Chambers delivering the address. The church could not accommodate the large number who gathered to pay last respects and hundreds witnessed the burial rites at Union cemetery. George Frederick Volk was born August 13, 1869 in Beerfelden, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, his age at death being 55 years, 5 months, and 15 days. He came to America with his parents in 1882 locating in Ottawa, Illinois (Note: this is likely where he met Martha Horn) He became a resident of Battle Creek community when his parents came to this place in 1883 and the remainder of his life was spent here. Mr. Volk was married to Martha Lydia Horn on October 23, 1890. In the death of Fred Volk, the community loses one of its most progressive as well as honored residents. He stood in high with business associates as a man who never violated his obligations or shirked a duty when his assistance in community affairs was needed. Aside from his wife and two sons, Elmer and George, there survived four brothers and four sisters: William of Meadow Grove; August, Conrad and John of Battle Creek; Mrs. A.J.
