Offutt is resting easy at this writing, but is in a critical condition, with chances against him. Taylor will be tried at the next term of the Circuit Court, which convenes in about two weeks. The article is too long to have all of it here, however I have extracted the important biographical information that the article contained. The article is titled "The Franklin KY., Tragedy" and has a byline of Franklin, August 20. Details are included regarding the shooting of City Marshal Jesse Offutt, by Henry Taylor on the south side of the Public Square in this city, yesterday evening. The article identifies Jesse Offutt as a cousin of Mr. Charles Offutt, the last speaker of the House of Representatives in the Kentucky Legislature, and that Henry Taylor was the son of one of the wealthiest and best known farmers in Simpson County and was a nephew of James and John Carter who were merchants in Louisville. Further stated that Taylor was the brother of the Misses Winnie, Mollie and Lavinia Taylor. Further stated is that Marshal Offutt was elected by the city council only 2 weeks before the shooting. Also advises that Jesse was a Confederate soldier during the war and was one of Morgan's Men until Morgan was captured. When examined by the doctor they found 2 bullet wounds in his back, one to the left and one to the right of the spine, as well as a bullet wound to the hand. Jesse is described as being about 40 years old, having a wife seven children living, the youngest being about two. The article states that Henry Taylor was 20, and that his stepfather was Mr. James Wickware. The article never states that the Marshal died, only that the doctor thought he wouldn't make it through the night.
  8. [S7149] The Daily American, March 17, 1885, Pg. 8, 3Printed in the Tuesday, March 17, 1885 edition of The Daily American on page 8. "Jesse Offutt, the City Marshal, who was shot last summer by Taylor, by his attorneys filed a civil suit against him for $10,000 damages. After all the pleadings in the case were made up and the case ready for trial, Offutt, without the knowledge or consent of his attorneys, who it seems were to receive a contingent fee, compromised with Taylor, by the latter paying him $2,500, and skipped the country, leaving the said limbs of the law in the lurch, feeling as if they had let something loose. Score this for one time - a lawyer was beaten. Trickery and Texas combined will down the best of them."
