He is survived by his loving family, his mother, Marilyn Offutt Mammel; his wife, Jane Ferguson; his sons, Eric and Connor; his sister, Mary Offutt Novelli; his nieces, nephews and his extensive network of family and friends.
John was born and raised in Omaha, NE and spent idyllic summers at the family cottage at Okoboji, IA. He graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1979 and Rice University with an Honors B.A. in 1983. He obtained his M.B.A. from Claremont Graduate University in California in 1985. While in Paris taking classes toward his degree in the summer of 1984, he met his future wife, Jane Ferguson. A three-week romance blossomed into a 36-year love story He moved to Toronto the day he finished his last exam and never left.
His first career was as an account executive in the advertising industry. He then obtained his real estate license and began a successful career buying, selling and renovating homes. Learning from his architect father and designer mother, John had an uncanny ability to see what others didn't in even the most neglected of houses and to transform them into something truly wonderful to live in. In his forties, he decided his talents and abundant energy would best be spent teaching, and he earned his B. Ed in 2005. Mr. "O" was a force of nature at Thorncliffe Park Public School as a kindergarten, 3rd grade and a gym teacher. His teaching philosophy was simple: Make your classroom a welcoming, Supportive place so that kids love school and learning will inevitably follow. He coached countless kids in athletics, ran a yoga club and a boys' book club.
John had many passions, and will be remembered for the incredible joie de vivre with which he pursued them. He was an avid reader, knowledgeable wine Enthusiast and loved to travel. He was a gifted athlete who loved cycling best of all. He enjoyed many cycling holidays and climbed most of the great peaks in Europe on his bike. He ran several marathons without ever training for them. He was a strong swimmer and completed several triathlons, including two as a guide for blind triathletes. He achieved his second-degree black belt in karate and studied yoga and completed his yoga teacher training. He was a loving and supportive husband. He loved his friends and sharing his passions with them, but he loved his sons most of all. He was in the process of completing a renovation for one son and planning a renovation for the other when he died.
John was well known for his volunteerism and his philanthropy. He coached soccer to underprivileged kids, was a camp counselor and water-ski instructor at a summer camp for kids with cancer and served on several community boards
While his death was a tragedy, his life was a joy that he lived with passion and enthusiasm, which inspired countless others. He leaves a hole in our lives that will never be filled.

    "JOHN LONGMAID OFFUTT

    June 30, 1961 — November 20, 2020

When John Offutt was about six, he used to pedal his bike as fast as he could right off the end of the dock at his family cottage in Iowa. Again and again, his feet a blur of movement, his young face kissed by wind, his body taking flight for a moment before the inevitable splash into the dark water. He just wanted to see how far he could get.

Offutt seized each of his days with the same optimism and drive. He trekked to Everest’s base camp and attained a master scuba diving license; he hosted a dinner party after returning home from heart surgery in 2018. On a whim, he invited a friend’s young stepson to join his family at the cottage because he heard the boy needed a change of scenery — then taught him how to water ski. He volunteered and coached and mentored. He shared his time with the same vigour that allowed him to run a marathon whenever the urge hit.

Then, in November, while Offutt was cycling down a Toronto street in the afternoon light, he was struck and killed by a cement truck. He was 59 years old, the exact age his father was when he died of cancer.

That loss had propelled Offutt to try to somehow squeeze even more out of every moment. While the tragedy of any death is absolute, it is harder to fully understand the loss of a person like Offutt, who was seemingly built of unfiltered vitality. “John only had two speeds: full speed ahead and then full stop,” says Jane Ferguson, his wife of 36 years. The two met in 1984 while studying abroad in Paris. She was immediately electrified by his upbeat attitude and intelligence. They were on the opposite ends of a double date, but by the time they were packing up their picnic in Monet’s garden at Giverny, they had fallen for each other.

Theirs was a sweeping, cinematic meeting, but Offutt had a way of inviting the exceptional into everyday encounters. In 1985, Offutt finished his MBA and joined Ferguson in Toronto, where he built a successful career as a visionary realtor and developer. At work, he thrived on the thrill of helping families find their perfect home and turning tired houses into timeless beauties. At home, he prided himself on teaching his two sons, Eric and Connor, to crawl by demonstrating the technique on hands and knees, laughing and encouraging them across the living room.

Then, in his 40s, he became disillusioned as real estate prices soared and families struggled to afford homes. Wanting to make a tangible difference, Offutt earned his teaching degree and became a kindergarten and gym teacher. For years, he taught at Thorncliffe Park Public School, an East York school that has since been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. He turned his boundless energy toward his students, many of whom were also learning English, with the same enthusiasm that he applied to the three-legged races he’d organized during family summers spent on Lake Okoboji.

Today, a jersey stitched with Offutt’s name hangs in the gym, presiding over the echoing space where he coached soccer and basketball teams, where he set up a yoga club for students after becoming a certified instructor, where he launched a book club for young readers. “He wanted every person to have the opportunity to become the best person they could be,” Ferguson says simply.

The first law of thermodynamics states that energy is never really created or destroyed — it merely changes forms. Perhaps that makes it easier to understand how the boy who walked the streets of his hometown in Omaha while reading — because he loved books but couldn’t sit still — grew into a man who was perpetually in motion. Perhaps that makes it easier, too, to process the fact that while there were peaks around the world that he still wanted to climb, mostly, says his wife, John Offutt wanted Toronto to be a kinder place, a place where people support each other. That energy, still rippling, may be Offutt’s ultimate legacy to the city that he loved.

John Offutt is survived by his mother, Marilyn Offutt Mammel; his wife, Jane Ferguson; his sons, Eric and Connor; his sister, Mary Offutt Novelli; his nieces and nephews and countless treasured friends."
