Offutt, 18 years old, had been severely wounded in France while serving with the 9th Infantry. Almost simultaneously came the information that his left arm had been blown off by an exploding shell, but no further information was given. Offutt enlisted In Louisville in September, 1917, and arrived in France the latter part of the following October. Offutt's brother, Samuel Offutt, is now on furlough here. He has been with the South Royal Midland Engineers of the British army for more than sixteen months, and was a sailor when he enlisted in England early in 1917. He also was injured in a shell explosion at Birmingham, England, and after his recovery was discharged as an American citizen. He has been called to report at Camp Zachary Taylor on June 27 with the next draft quota."
