According to the Sons of American Revolution application for William Calvin Offutt, Nathan was a corporal in Captain James Magruder's Company in 1780. He also is credited with signing the Patriot's Oath in Montgomery County, Maryland in 1778. However there is a handwritten note that indicated that no military service records were found.
