    It was a great surprise to the citizens of Montgomery, yesterday morning to learn that Mr. Tilghman Offut was dead. He had been in feeble health for a long time, but did not take his bed, and remained up as long as his frail system would permit. He was out as late as last Saturday, but after reaching home that evening it was evident that the vital spark would soon disappear. He was conscious until almost the last moment, and peacefully breathed his last at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. He was born January 19th, 1847, and consequently had just entered the 41st year of his age. He came to Montgomery from his house at Logan county, Kentucky in 1865, and has ever since resided here. No man was ever more conscientious in his dealings with fellow man, and no one more scrupulously honest and correct in all business transactions. During his connection with the ADVERTISER office he occupied a position involving much responsibility; involving the handling of thousands of dollars, and those with whom he associated can bear willing testimony to his incorruptible honesty and his faithful discharge of duty. He realized a year or more ago that the insidious disease, consumption, had laid it's heavy hand upon him. He was a great sufferer for many months before his death, but bore up with wonderful cheerfulness and Christian resignation. To his wife and two little boys and his other relations, the people of Montgomery tender their sympathy and sorrow with them over the early death of one who did his duty as husband, father, son, brother and citizen."

Offutt arrived in the city, having; been detailed by Marshal Osborne for duty at the polls here. He complained of feeling unwell, and on Tuesday morning felt unable to arise from his bed, and sent for Dr. Collier. He remained in his room all day, and on Wednesday his condition was considered critical and his brothers in Montgomery were telegraphed for, but too late for them to reach Troy that night. On Thursday he was steadily sinking and that night Messrs. Tilghman Offutt and John C. Clark arrived. They were informed of his condition, but were apparently unconvinced that his end was so near. He died about 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, and his remains were taken Saturday morning to Montgomery for interment. Mr. Offutt had many, friends where he was known. His duties as an officer were at times unpleasant, but it is stated that he was not harsh in their performance. In private life he was genial, free hearted and charitable. During his last hours here he received unremitting attention and all his wants were ministered to."
