State police said John P. Offutt, 69, of Elizabethtown, Ky., died at Harding Memorial Hospital about a half-hour after the 3 p.m. EST accident. Police said Offutt's car was struck broadside by an oncoming car when he attempted to make a left turn. He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen; a stepson, Larry Hibbs of Elizabethtown; three brothers, Robert of Madisonville, Alvin of Paducah and George of Morganfield; and his mother, Mrs. Nannie Offutt of Madisonville. He graduated from Connersville High School and Hanover College. He taught physics and mathematics in Brownsville and Liberty schools and was a veteran of World War II.

He was a 1958 graduate of Fulton High School, where he was a member of the Pen and Scroll Honor Society, and he attended UT. A memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Rose's. There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday at Bookwalter Cemetery."

Offutt, who was a native of McGhee, Ark., lived in Teague before moving to Seminole about 20 years ago to work as a driller for Magnolia Oil Company. For the past several years he was associated with his son-in-law, J. B. (Bart) Walden in the operation of the Walden Welding Works. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Julia Offutt, a daughter, Mrs. J.
