  24. [S5122] The Hancock Democrat, March 13, 1913, Pg. 8, Printed in the Thursday, March 13, 1913 edition of The Hancock Democrat on page 8. “Thomas Humphrey Offutt - Thomas Humphrey Offutt was born in Scott county, Kentucky, on the 17th day of September, 1838, the son of Lloyd and Elizabeth Offutt. To these parents were born, in Kentucky, eight children, of whom Thomas Humphrey was the second child. Three of these children, Susan Emeline, James and John William, died in early childhood. In 1845 the parents, with the other children, Jane, Margaret, Thomas H., and Louisa and Charles G., left Kentucky and came to Greenfield, Ind., where the home was again made. At this time Thomas Humphrey was seven years of age. During his boyhood, he, with his brothers and sisters, including a younger sister, California, attended the public schools in Greenfield. When a young man Thomas began clerking in the dry goods store of Wallace & Banks, in Greenfield, the junior member of this firm being the late Andrew J. Banks; later he was a clerk in the Heavenridge Dry Goods Store and in the George Walker Dry Goods Store, both in Greenfield. After working in Greenfield for some time he went to Indianapolis, and became the chief floor man, or floor walker, in the store of Tousey & Byram, then one of the leading dry goods stores in Indianapolis. During all of this time he was regarded as an experienced and very successful man in this line of work. Later he returned to Greenfield and learned the carpenter trade, an occupation which he followed to the time of his death, with the exception of the years from 1894 to 1900, when he was the bailiff of the Hancock Circuit Court. During his early manhood he was also a member of the old Saxhorn band in Greenfield, the Eastman band, which Riley has immortalized in his poems. In 1861 Thomas Offutt was united in marriage to Miss Sallie Gephart. To this union were born two children, Elmer Lloyd Offutt, who died when he was seven years old, and Cora Belle Huffman, who is now living. In early life Thomas Offutt became a member of the Christian church of this city, which church he attended for many years. However, of later years he has attended the Presbyterian church, of which, at the time of his death, he was the care-taker. Until about a week before his death, Thomas Offutt had enjoyed exceptionally good health; however, during the present winter, he complained some of not feeling well, but there seemed to be nothing seriously the matter with him. But, on Tuesday, February 25th last, he became seriously ill with pneumonia. This sickness gradually overcame him, until in the morning of March 3rd he died, aged 74 years, 5 months, and 16 days. He left surviving him, his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Cora Huffman, three grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Addison, Mrs. Mary Friel, and John Dowling; also three sisters, Mrs. Jane Barnett, Mrs. Louisa Taylor, and Mrs. California Beecher; and a large number of relatives and friends. The story of the life of Thomas Offutt is the story in some degree at least of the life of Greenfield. He came to Greenfield in 1845, when Greenfield was a mere town, with no streets improved and no improved sidewalks and with few of the buildings that are now standing. During practically all the years since then Thomas Offutt has lived in Greenfield, mingling with its people, sharing their life, their joys, their sorrows, being a part of the life of this city for over sixty-eight years. The older people now living knew him well, and he was more or less known to all the people who have been in Greenfield in after years. And in the minds and hearts of all these people during all of these sixty-eight years, Tom Offutt has had a warm place. Kind of heart, genial, honest as the day is long, a conscientious workman, absolutely true to his word and his friends, devoted to his wife and family and grandchildren, he was a true gentleman. And when the soul of Thomas Offutt went to its Maker, another of Greenfield’s true-hearted men went home.” (Please note that the age they give would by a date calculator indicate that if born September 17, 1838 he would have died on March 5, 1913, not the third).

I have transcribed parts of it, but left out others to keep the length down. "The Sudden Death of Chas. G. Offutt. At 2 o'clock Friday afternoon Judge Charles G. Offutt passed into eternity at his home on North street. The news of his sudden death shocked the community and cast a great gloom over the entire city, causing many of the older citizens to stop and live a few minutes in reminiscences of the early days when Judge Offutt and all were boys together. ..... Judge Charles G. Offutt, son of Lloyd and Elizabeth Offutt, was born in Georgetown, Ky., on the 4th day of October, 1845, and departed this life at his late home in the city of Greenfield, Ind., on the 28th day of August, 1903, aged fifty-seven years, ten months and twenty four days. When about one year old his parents removed from Georgetown to Greenfield, which has ever since been his home. ..... On the 15th day of July, 1874, he was married to Miss Anna Hammel, eldest daughter of the late Frederick Hammel, and to them was born three children: Clara, Samuel J. and Charles G., who survive him, his wife having died at her late home in Greenfield on July 21, 1899." Later in the article it talks about meetings of the Hancock County Bar, the first taking place Saturday last to plan the funeral, the second at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon after which they attended the funeral.

"Assassination of Colonel Offutt. - WASHINGTON, La., January 23, 1876. EDITOR REPUBLICAN: Colonel Offutt was shot on Saturday morning, about one mile from his home, while riding in his buggy to make his daily visit to his relatives in Washington. A shot was fired from the rear of the buggy, which went through the glue of the top and straight through the head of the victim, coming out of his right eye. A negro named Augustan, who was seen with a shotgun, and who had told some colored woman that Colonel Offutt was shot, was suspected of the crime, and when search was made for him he ran out from under his cabin and escaped into a swamp, which is now surrounded by about 100 armed men. Colonel Offutt's horse had been started by the shot, and run off with the forepart of the buggy. When found Colonel Offutt was still in his seat, with his whip grasped in his hand and his pipe in his lap. He was unconscious, and after being brought to his home died at daybreak on Sunday. He was about sixty-eight years of age and greatly respected by all classes of the population, having entirely withdrawn from politics after the expiration of his term as Senator in 1870. G". Wm. Offutt that were in a dispatch that apparently was from Washington, St. Landry, Jan. 22. I've transcribed portions of the article: Col. Offutt, the deceased was a native of St. Landry parish and about sixty-eight years of age. He was a man so greatly respected and beloved that it is supposed he was either murdered for purposes of robbery or through mistake for some other person. Before the late war Col. Offutt and his brother, Nathaniel, the latter also deceased, were in business together, and not only possessed large planting interests, but were extensively engaged in milling and the lumber business in the parish of St. Martin and upon Grand River, with a depot in this city which, if we mistake not was under the management of Mr. Frank Perritt, a brother-in-law. The brothers were also extensively engaged in steamboating and were owners of the Ophelia, Burton, Alice M. Glaize, Anna and the Nina Simms. …. Having lost his wife about six weeks ago, he came down to the city, but returned home on the trip before the last of the steamer St. Mary. … He leaves five children to mourn his sudden death, four daughters, all married except the youngest, and one son. Dr. Offutt, a practicing physician, residing in the parish of Avolyelles. Col. Offutt's place is about three miles from Washington, on the Bayou Courtableau."
