As the testimonial published in another column will show, he was greatly beloved by his associates, who admired the manly qualities and attractive characteristics for which he was distinguished. Mr. Knoblock, his roommate, remained with him throughout his illness and nursed him most tenderly and assiduously; an act of heroism which has called forth universal praise and commendation. MEDICAL DEPT UNIV. LOUISIANA,
         March 3, 1874
Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God to re move from our midst our friend and companion. NATHANIEL OFFUT, the fellow-members of the medical class have assembled to pay our last tribute of respect to his memories.
After serving with bravery in the Confederate army, he came to acquire a profession that would fit him for the proper discharge of those relations he bore to his fellow-men. Entering upon his studies with untiring industry, at the beginning of the last collegiate course he contracted, in the performance of his duties, an illness which for many days held him upon the verge of the tomb, and now, just as the object for which he so earnestly labored was nearly in his grasp, the hand that was stretched forward to receive the reward of his teachers, fell useless in death. In attempting to alleviate the sufferings of another, he fell victim to the very disease he was striving to abate. In all the pride and power of his manly strength. amid the pleasures of youth, with the grand panorama of life spread out before him, he has passed away from amongst us. To those of us who knew him most intimately, his good qualities as a friend make us mourn his loss, and to us all he furnished a fit example of the true dignity of a man in the honorable discharge of a high trust: therefore be it Resolved, That in the loss of Nathaniel Offut we mourn the absence of a friend whom we honored: a companion ever ready to add to the happiness of those around him; a student who made his profession his love; a gentleman of the highest order of bravery - one who for charity's sake met his death with unflinching courage. To his widowed mother and relatives we tender our sincere sympathy in their bereavement
