Kirby, the old cowboy, will be missed by his wife Ruth, his children, John, Susan and Irene, and their families, and stepdaughter Pam Butler. Kirby joined the Navy when he finished high school. He was active duty in Korea. After 5 years he came home to complete his education. He joined the reserves, where he spent 27 years and retired as a Chief PO. Kirby was a "walking history book." He taught history for 31 years, first at Jason Lee, then over 25 years at Wilson High School. He never lost his love of lecturing about history. His library consists of over 2500 volumes. Kirby and Ruth moved to New Mexico for 3-1/2 years. His desire was to see the countryside of the famous, and infamous, people who settled the west. One of the highlights of his life was taking Ruth to Mount Rushmore. He saw it many times and was awed each time as much as the first. We returned to Tacoma in 1995 to be near our family and friends.
A memorial will be held Thursday, Jan 1, 2004 [1 Jan 2004] in Tacoma at the Portland Ave Community Center, 3513 Portland Ave, from 3 to 5 pm. In lieu of flowers, Kirby would have wished a donation to Franciscan Hospice."
