He had not been feeling well but was not considered seriously ill until Tuesday afternoon. The family left with Offutt by ambulance for Nashville about midnight Tuesday. He was said to be suffering from a kidney ailment. He was the son of the late Elijah Benjamin and Lena Hewlett Offutt, attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green and taught in the Hopkins County School System for a time. He coached basketball at Hanson School and also at Mortons Gap. He was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a member of the Harlan Methodist Church in Harlan, KY., the Madisonville Elks Lodge as was a past commander of American Legion post #6. He served with the Army in the European theater during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. R. C. Furgerson, Mrs. P. G. Brown, and Mrs. Roy Haire, all of Madisonville; three brothers, Everett and Robert S. Offutt, Madisonville, and John William Offutt, Earlington, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Kostencki, with internment to be in Grapevine Cemetery.
