In the Wounded section, second column of the article it states: "Technical Sergt. Elmer D. Offutt and Sergt. Russell E. Offutt, first cousins, of near Gaithersburg, Md., were today listed by the War Department as wound in action in the European area. The cousins, who attended Gaithersburg High School, were both members of the National Guard and entered active service with the Army when the Guard was activated in February, 1940. They took part in the invasion of France with the 29th Division. Sergt. Russell Offutt received a shrapnel wound during the invasion, but was soon returned to his company. According to his family he again back in active service following his second wound. He is the son of Walter Offutt of Gaithersburg. His wife lives with a sister, Mrs. Margaret King, also of Gaithersburg. Sergt. Elmer Offutt is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer O. Offutt, Gaithersburg." [After some additional research, the February 1940 date is probably an error. The Marlyland National Guard was placed in Federal Service February 3, 1941. So while the February 3, 1941 date is correct, it represents the date he entered active service in the U.S. Army, not the date that he entered service with the Maryland National Guard]
