From N. Wayne Cosby (Bedford64@aol.com) who is writing a Regimental History of the 8th Louisiana Infantry. His sources are a book by Father Hebert on the Catholic Diocese in St. Landry's Parish and the microfilm rolls at the LA State Archives.

John Posey Offutt: Enlisted as a 3rd Sergeant in Company F, the Opelousas Guards, of St. Landry's Parish, LA on June 19, 1861 at Camp Moore, LA. He was reduced to Private on April 24, 1862, and then was appointed Sergeant again on June 24, 1862. He was killed while charging the enemy's works at Gaine's Mill, VA on June 27, 1862. He was said to be "an excellent youth and a good soldier". He was born in St. Landry on July 29, 1843 to William Johnson Offutt and Eliza Posey Offutt. He was the brother of the William Offutt who was also in the same unit.
