William B. Hayden
In the 1880 census, William has been unemployed for 7 months. Lived on "Ark" (Houseboat). From Alex., down Mt. Vernon Pkwy to about circle on right. You went left, over narrow rickty "gangplank" over "dike" to get there. Lucille Armstrong remembers being scared to death that she'd fall in the water. They were awful looking then, she'd be "scared to stay in them." Probably paid no rent, there were 3-4 of them there and lots more up & down the river, especially at the bottom of Lee Street Hill.
