Alexandria Census. It also showed that Clifton could read and write and that he spoke English. He lived in a rented house. They had been married 6 years in the 1900 census. According to John H. Thomas, "Uncle Cliff" sired a child at the age of 80. It's not certain if it was this "Uncle Cliff" or his grandfather's brother Cliff Hayden. Since Edith died early, it wouldn't be her child (Fannie), but it is presumed to be this "Uncle Cliff."

In the 1920 census for Alexandria City, I found Cliff Hayden as the head of a household. He's 48 years old. Since Edith died in 1903 he's already a widower. He was born in Virginia. His parents were born in Virginia. He was a carpenter with his own shop. He was paid by his own account.

In the 1910 census, you find his daughter Fannie living with her grandparents, George and Fannie Peverill (? hard to be sure). She is 14 at the time.
