In the name of God, Amen, I, Rezin Offutt, of the State of Virginia and Fairfax County, being in perfect health and memory blessed to the Almighty God for the same, I do hereby make and publish this my last will & Testament Written altogether in my hand writing in manner & form as follows

I give & bequeath unto John S. Patterson           - 5 sh. sterling
I give & bequeath unto Thomas S. Patterson " "
I give & bequeath unto William H. Patterson " "
I give & bequeath unto Sarah Swope " "
I give & bequeath unto the Heirs of Charles H. Patterson 5 shillings sterling.

These are my first wife's children.

I give & bequeath unto Robert H. Douglas - 5 sh. Sterling

This is my present wife's son.

I give & bequeath unto Rezin Offutt Smith a negro girl Cate, She & her increase forever.

I give & bequeath unto my son Ell Offutt a Negro boy, Alexander and negro boy, Nelson.


I give & bequeath to my three sons, and Daughter that is to say, James Offutt, Eli Offutt, Alfred D. Offutt, & Eliza Smith that tract of land on the North side of Difficult Run where John S. Herl now lives, also part of the tract I now live on beginning at the ford of Difficult Run near John S. Herl's Gate thence with the several Course and Meanders of the Road to two Small persimmon trees where my blacksmith shop stood, thence partly west rather more Southwest, to an old walnut tree standing on what is called the walnut old field, about eighteen pole to the walnut tree, thence South to intersect with my line next to Wileys and Fairfax line, thence with my line to Fairfax and William Sheppards lines, thence to the East Station on Difficult Run, thence down the ad run with the several courses and meanders to the Beginning, near John S, Herl's Gate - this land to be sold or rented - it is not to be divided - the monies arising from rent or sale is to be divided between my three sons and daughter that is to say, James Offutt, Eli Offutt, Alfred Offutt and Eliza Smith and their heirs.

If George Smith's heirs, or their representatives, should bring suit for a piece of land that Wiley now owns, joining the Tolson tract of land should there be any cost or loss of Land, the damage is to come out of the monys that will be due to Eliza Smith for her share of Land.

Will of Rezin Offutt - p. 2

I give & bequeath to my beloved wife the balance of the tract of land on which I now live with all its improvements during her widowhood and then to be sold or rented and the moneys to be divided between my four children, James Offutt, Elis (sic) Offutt, Alvfred (sic) Offutt and Eliza Smith.

I give & bequeath to my son Esly Offutt Twenty Dollars no more. I think he has received his full portion of my Estate in Cash and other property, etc.

I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Offutt the following negroes Charles, Henry, Bazil, Sanford, George, Eli, Nancy and her dau Milly, they and their increase during the life of my wife and after her death all the negroes to belong to my son Alfred D. Offutt forever.

I give & bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Offutt Four Feather Beds, with a double set of bed cloathes, one set for winter the other for summers and all the household and kitchen furniture and what blacksmith tools is on the plantation, one half of the stock of any description provision for the use of my wife and her family and Stock one waggon and Cart with all the ploughs, hoes and axes, etc. with all the poultry.

I give & bequeath to my son Alfred D. Offutt all the balance of my negroes, that is to say, Negro man Forest, John, Edmund, Hannah and her child Henry, Negro woman Seine and her child Delila, boy Oliver, Mary and William, they and their increase forever.

I give & bequeath to my son Alfred D. Offutt all my wearing apparell, Saddle and bridle, the Stills and apple mills with tubs and casks and barrels are to be sold and one half of the stock and everything that is found that is not divided is to be sold-and moneys to be appropriated for the use of my son Alfred D. Offutt after my just debts are paid.

It is my desire that Alfred should have a liberal education and after the death of my wife, the property I have left her is to be the property of my son Alfred P. Offutt and no other person. And lastly I nominate and appoint my beloved wife Mary Offutt, my son Eli Offutt and Robert H. Douglass to be executors of this my last Will and Testament revoking all former Will by me made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eighteen hundred and fourteen. (23 June 1814)

At a Court continued and held for Fairfax County, the 18th day of June 1816, This last Will and Testament of Rezin Offutt, deceased was presented in Court and the same being proved by the oaths of W.J. Alldredge and Sarah Alldredge is admitted to record.

Guardian Bond - Eli Offutt, Samuel Smith, Temple Smith, and James Gunnell ... Five Thousand Dollars

Above bound Eli Offutt who hath this day been appointed Guardian to Alfred P. Offutt until the said Orphan shall attain his lawful age.



It is probable that the witnesses to the will of Rezin Offutt, W. J. and Sarah Aldredge/Alldredge were the daughter and son-in-law of Margaret (Berry/Barrv) and her first husband, Harrison Manley; Margaret-m/2 Edward Sanford.

Issue of Margaret Berry & Harrison Manley:

3.     Mary Manley m/1 John Wallace Douglas; m/2 Rezin Offutt

4.     Pentlope Manley

The nuncupative will of Margaret Sanford, of Alexandria, Va., dated 25 Sept. 1817, was witnessed by Mary Offutt and Sarah Aldridge.
