Grace Smith Offutt, #38 - new text file
When on Kentucky Ave. Grace would put up a Christmas scene that
would take up her entire Living Room. You would stand in the
double doors at either the hallway entrance or the dining room
entrance to see it. She even covered up her piano. Uncle Pete
had made her several large items to put under it, including a
working waterwheel, complete with water. She LOVED Christmas and
everything that went with it. It's believed that most of her
Christmas scene was left in the attic on Kentucky Ave. when they
moved to Montgomery County. Once Will Rhodes brought her a
beautiful mandolin and on another occasion he presented her with
a live monkey which was a mistake. The monkey was an attractive
nuisance which like to swing from the parlor chandelier and
enjoyed jumps from the piano to the window sill--it was not
housebroken.
Pat Thomas has Grace Offutt born May 1887, and being 13 years old
in the 1900 census of D.C. She could read and write and attended
school for 9 months.
Lived on 8th ST and Kentucky Ave., S.E. (Corner). Later moved to Rocky Road in Montgomery County. Known for her love of animals. She was always nursing a sick bird, cat, dog, etc. There were also horses which Pete cared for. Visiting her was always a pleasure
